View all orchestras Brentwood Junior String OrchestraBJSO gives young string players in Brentwood an opportunity to enjoy orchestral playing.
Since 1990 our reputation has spread and we are now attracting a huge number of players. String players usually stay in the orchestra until they are year 7 or when it is hoped that they will progress into either Phoenix Flames (the training orchestra for the Youth Orchestra) or the Phoenix Youth Orchestra. The orchestra gives a least two performances a year, depending on events with the other orchestras in the organisation. We also have social events such as a Christmas party or trip to a pantomime. In addition to these regular events BJSO has also played at the Chelmsford, Leigh-on-Sea and Southend Music Festivals. They have twice played on Liverpool Station for "commuter proms" and in September 1993 they were the first to perform in the new, and then unfinished, Brentwood Theatre for the dedication ceremony. In 1994 they had the honour to be invited to play at the Royal Albert Hall for the opening ceremony of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists International Congress in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal and last year, 2003, they were invited to play in the Mayor's Civic Carol Service. In the year 2000 we invited Gonzalo Acosta, the associate leader of the English National Opera Orchestra and who grew up in Brentwood, to help us celebrate our 10th anniversary by working with the children by giving master classes and playing with the orchestra. Our Conductor: The orchestra is directed by Ann Elderton, a well known local violin teacher, who is assisted by a team of string teachers who tutor the children for section rehearsals; and a committee of parents. Rehearsals: The orchestra meets on Friday evenings during term time from 4.45pm to 6.00pm at the Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School, Queens Road, Brentwood with termly Sunday afternoon workshops.
Fees: £48 per term, to be paid by Standing Order. |
